Smoking: It's hard to kick the habit

Quit Smoking Now: Nail biting, gum chewing and foul-tasting nicotine lozenges all have become a part of my reality this week as I try to quit smoking for about the 10th time in my 24 years. Like many a foolish teenager, I started smoking in high school because I thought it was cool.

I can remember how it all started - I was at an evening drama club rehearsal and some of the older cast members were sneaking around outside smoking cigarettes during the breaks. I was offered one, and, as a lowly freshman wanting to impress the older crowd, I took it.

What started as a few puffs taken between coughs developed into a 10-year bad habit, and I now find myself huffing and hacking on the treadmill at the gym. It's time I break this addiction, but as anyone who has tried to do so can tell you, its no easy or pleasant task.

Quit Smoking Now: Dr. Ralph Q: What's the best way to quit smoking?A: As an ex-smoker, I consider myself an expert on this topic. In fact, I quit several times! The last time was five years ago this past Thanksgiving. I'm not cocky enough to say that it is my last time, although I sure hope it is.

I know myself well enough to know that I can never have one cigarette again without planning on starting a pack a day habit. Some people can handle an occasional cigarette. The huge addiction problem to nicotine is a testament to the fact that many people are, like me, prone to addiction. I don't know that you would reach a consensus on any one best method for quitting, but I can tell you what worked for me and some of my patients. It's a process that takes a while, but one doesn't learn how to be a smoker the first time you puff on a cigarette.

Quit Smoking Hypnosis Now: Some anniversaries are worth celebrating. A 50th wedding anniversary is definitely reason for a big party. You have to agree that, today, even a 25th anniversary is a milestone. You might hope for a raise on the anniversary of your first day on the job. Maybe you commemorate the day you met your spouse, or the day you quit smoking. Even birthdays are anniversaries of sorts. Some events demand a more contemplative nod of acknowledgment. You note the date, silently remember, and move on. The book 1 Dead in Attic by Chris Rose is like that. It shouts "Remember us!" while it quietly, urgently nudges you forward.

Chris Rose says that, years ago, he was travelling with a friend on vacation, when they stumbled into a New Orleans watering-hole and were summarily ousted. Later, Rose says that another friend told him about a job at the Times-Picayune, and he fondly remembered his short time spent in the Crescent City.
