How I Quit Smoking

Pocket Doc - On Quit smoking

How I Quit Smoking: Dr. Ralph.Q: What’s the best way to quit smoking?A: As an ex-smoker, I consider myself an expert on this topic. In fact, I quit several times! The last time was five years ago this past Thanksgiving. I’m not cocky enough to say that it is my last time, although I sure hope it is.

I know myself well enough to know that I can never have one cigarette again without planning on starting a pack a day habit. Some people can handle an occasional cigarette. The huge addiction problem to nicotine is a testament to the fact that many people are, like me, prone to addiction.

I don’t know that you would reach a consensus on any one best method for quitting, but I can tell you what worked for me and some of my patients. It’s a process that takes a while, but one doesn’t learn how to be a smoker the first time you puff on a cigarette.

Around Nunavik

How I Quit Smoking: From now until the end of September, the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services wants to hear how you quit smoking. The board is gathering stories from former smokers in Nunavik to “encourage and inspire smokers in Nunavik to quit,” as part of a book project funded by the National Office of Literacy and Learning. The book wants to bolster the determination of the 50 per cent of Nunavik smokers, who say they tried to quit over the past 12 months, according to the 20o4 Qanuippitaa health survey.Up to 40 ex-smokers will be paid for their stories which may be included in “How I was able to quit smoking: stories from Inuit”- and they stand to make even more money if their stories make it into the final edition. For more information, contact Maggie Aupalu at maggiekiluaq@hotmail.com or the Nunavik health board at 819-964-2222.

How I Quit Smoking: As a kid, I don’t ever remember my dad not smoking. The smell of cigarette smoke was a staple in my life growing up.We’d play Nintendo, a home video game, while we were living together when I was in college and he’d control the game with both hands while holding his cigarette between his two front teeth. His white mustache was stained from nicotine. He first started smoking socially when he was 15.

He began smoking regularly and heavily when he was 20 and for the next 40 years smoked two packs every day. He quit once for three years during those 40 years. His sisters and his father smoked, but were all able to kick the habit years ago. My dad has said my late grandpa, a World War II veteran and all around great man, quit after I asked him to stop.

Just like that. I don’t know how true that is because I was small, but I like repeating the story. But my dad, a bachelor of about 30 years who had devoted himself to his kids and his job as a basketball coach, was a holdout.
