Quit Smoking Without Gaining Weight

Staten Island’s Dan Icolari blogs about walking

Quit Smoking Without Gaining Weight: When the bus never came after his Staten Island synagogue let out one Friday night, Dan Icolari began to walk.He hoofed it 3 1/2 miles to his St. George home in the same borough that Friday three years ago. When he arrived, Icolari was less frustrated by an apparent failure in mass transit and more excited about a revelation - walking is transportation.“I felt triumphant,” said the semi-retired advertising executive and recently minted walking blogger during a recent jaunt near his old high school in Greenwich Village.

Starting this semester, smoking is prohibited on all school grounds.

Quit Smoking Without Gaining Weight: Smokers returning for the fall semester at Raritan Valley Community College will find their habit prohibited by a new policy. Starting Monday, RVCC will be a smoke-free campus. Smoking will not be permitted in any buildings or on college grounds.RVCC follows two other New Jersey schools, County College of Morris and Burlington County College, in instituting the policy.“Everyone agreed it was the right direction for the college,” said Casey Crabill, president of RVCC. “It’s going to be easier to enact the change in the beginning of the school year rather than the middle, so we’re starting right away.”

RVCC’s former policy allowed students to smoke outside as long as they were 25 feet from campus buildings. Smoking inside has always been prohibited. The proximity rule, Crabill said, was confusing for many, and resulted in a number of unnecessary disagreements over what was 25 feet away and what wasn’t.

Report shows more than a fifth of Arizonans are obese

Quit Smoking Without Gaining Weight: Better jump on the treadmill, Arizona. The state’s residents are just as obese as ever, according to statistics released Monday.Arizona’s adult obesity rate was projected at 21.7 percent, making it the 43rd-heaviest state in the nation, according to Trust for America’s Health, a research group that focuses on disease prevention.

That rate was an increase of just under a percentage point from the previous survey. While only seven states were less obese than Arizona, Trust for America spokeswoman Laura Segal said the numbers still are troubling.
‘While states like Arizona are on the lower end of the spectrum, it’s still pretty alarming from a health point of view,” Segal said’. It’s putting people at increased risk for a range of health problems.”States that weighed less than Arizona include Montana, Massachusetts and Hawaii.
