What does it feels like to have quit smoking?
Chemical addiction to smoking nicotine is about powerful brain dopamine "pay-attention" pathways burying nearly all memory of what it was like being free. It's about coming to believe that smoking nicotine defines who we are, that it gives us our edge, that we must have it to cope with stress, and that life without it just won't be as good. What's the truth? What is it like to quit smoking for at least a year? "Since I quit I now have 3000% more energy. I now enjoy my sports again. I met a beautiful lady and married her," says Tommy who quit in 2004 and resides in Moscow. "I have no cravings. I do not want to smoke. I actually find it funny because most of the time I cannot remember smoking and cannot imagine myself smoking - and I smoked for over 20+ years.""Quitting smoking is the best thing I ever did, and I have not been sick even one time since I quit, no bronchitis, pleurisy, not even a cold.
Many will lose under increased tobacco tax
Sioux City - Congrats on the passing of the $1-per-pack tax on cigarettes. Just to let you know, it hasn't convinced me to quit smoking. But let's see who loses." target="_blank"> | Small | Large Sioux City - Congrats on the passing of the $1-per-pack tax on cigarettes. Just to let you know, it hasn't convinced me to quit smoking. But let's see who loses.A dollar a pack makes 10 dollars a carton. I smoke a carton per week, that's $520 per year. Hmmmm ... that's exactly the amount that I personally donated to the United Way this year (earmarked for the Senior Center and the Boys and Girls Home). The money has to come from somewhere so I guess the United Way is out from now on.Besides that, I will still buy cigarettes, I just won't buy them in Iowa. Now think of all the cities on the borders of Iowa and all the other states that people who live in those cities can go to for cigarettes without this ridiculous tax.
Studies suggest exercise can help smokers quit
People who wish to quit smoking may have found a new ally that can help them kick their habit while also improving their health: exercise. A review of several studies at the University of Exeter in England found that exercising as little as five minutes per day can significantly reduce the intensity of the nicotine withdrawal symptoms felt by people who smoke, according to The Associated Press.
Dr. Rolly Sullivan explained that smoking releases a neurotransmitter in the brain called dopamine, which provides feelings of enjoyment and motivates people to perform certain activities. ''Exercise releases a similar hormone in the brain which serves as a distraction, so smokers feel less of a withdrawal,'' said Sullivan, a professor of behavioral medicine and psychiatry at West Virginia University.
