Doctors say to prevent cancer, quit smoking
Iowa’s annual report on cancer is out, and the numbers have doctors smiling. Over the last nine years the number of Iowans’ lives saved has steadily increased. From 1997 to 2005, more than 3,000 cancer patients have survived. Still more than 15,000 Iowans will be diagnosed with cancer this year. And 6400 of them will die. But doctors say the lower numbers show a change in the fight against cancer. Doctors say quitting smoking is one of the best ways to prevent cancer. Before tobacco, lung cancer was a rare disease in this country. Not any more.
The latest estimates nearly 2,000 Iowans will die this year alone. One eastern Iowa man nearly lost his battle with cancer. He knows what’s at stake. Doctors have been telling us to quit smoking for years. Today lung cancer is the most deadly form of cancer in Iowa.
Low-tar cigarettes just as harmful, Hong Kong study finds
Low-tar cigarettes can be just as harmful as stronger cigarettes, according to a study released Monday by the Hong Kong government. Government scientists said they had examined 95 brands of cigarettes and also studied the smoking habits of the people who bought them.
They concluded that while some brands contained less nicotine and tar, smokers often compensated by taking deeper drags and smoking more frequently, cancelling out the health benefit.A Department of Health spokesman said the survey showed that low-tar cigarettes were “not necessarily less harmful and the best way to protect health is to quit smoking.”“When smokers choose low-tar cigarettes instead of cigarettes in the middle-tar or high-tar groups, they may take larger and more frequent puffs or even smoke more cigarettes each day.
What does it feels like to have quit smoking?
Chemical addiction to smoking nicotine is about powerful brain dopamine “pay-attention” pathways burying nearly all memory of what it was like being free. It’s about coming to believe that smoking nicotine defines who we are, that it gives us our edge, that we must have it to cope with stress, and that life without it just won’t be as good. What’s the truth? What is it like to quit smoking for at least a year? “Since I quit I now have 3000% more energy.
I now enjoy my sports again. I met a beautiful lady and married her,” says Tommy who quit in 2004 and resides in Moscow. “I have no cravings. I do not want to smoke. I actually find it funny because most of the time I cannot remember smoking and cannot imagine myself smoking - and I smoked for over 20+ years.”“Quitting smoking is the best thing I ever did, and I have not been sick even one time since I quit, no bronchitis, pleurisy, not even a cold.
