Quit smoking classes at hospital
Help To Quit Smoking: Hanover Hospital’s next - “Freedom From Smoking” program begins Monday. Classes will be held weekly from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Hanover Community Health & Education Center, 400 York St., Hanover. The program is free.“Freedom From Smoking” is an empowering six-week course that helps uncover all the ways to quit smoking and determine which method is best suited for you. Topics in this fun and no-pressure class include stress management, behavior modification, weight and exercise management and lifestyle issues as they relate to smoking.
The class also uses the “buddy system” to incorporate peer support during the quitting process, and is facilitated by a certified smoking cessation/tobacco addiction educator.

Working towards a healthy Brandon - Part Three: Tobacco Cessation
Help To Quit Smoking: Kicking the habit is made a little easier with the help of Healthy Brandon’s tobacco cessation initiative. With several dedicated groups and individuals working both on prevention and reduction of smoking, Healthy Brandon is encouraging residents to choose fresh air for their lungs.
Quit 4 You is a smoking reduction and cessation program offered by the Brandon Regional Health Authority. Erin Hunt, the program counselor, said she works with community members and hospital inpatients at addressing the costs of smoking.
Quit 4 You is a program that can help people quit smoking that is free of charge, and anyone can come in to the hospital for an appointment. I also try to see everyone who comes into the hospital for something else,” said Hunt.
So if you break your leg, I’m going to come talk to you about smoking.”
The free counselling Hunt provides Brandonites aiming to butt out includes tricks and tips” designed to make the quitting process easier for people.
ASH supports new smoking guidelines
Help To Quit Smoking: Ash Nz is delighted that healthcare workers will now be provided with new guidance on how to help their patients to quit smoking, using new guidelines launched today by the Ministry of Health. Ben Youdan, ASH director says, “One in five deaths in middle age in New Zealand is attributable to smoking, and most of these could be prevented though stopping smoking. Two thirds of smokers want to quit and providing the best possible support for them to do so will significantly increase the chance of success, and in turn the chances of longer healthier life.
