Stop smoking classes at hospital

Best Way To Stop Smoking: Hanover Hospital's next "Freedom From Smoking" program begins Monday, Sept. 17. Classes will be held weekly from 6 to 7:30 p.m. through Oct. 22 at the Hanover Community Health & Education Center, 400 York St., Hanover. The program is free.

"Freedom From Smoking" is an empowering six-week course that helps uncover all the ways to quit smoking and determine which method is best suited for you. Topics in this fun and no-pressure class include stress management, behavior modification, weight and exercise management and lifestyle issues as they relate to smoking. The class also uses the "buddy system" to incorporate peer support during the quitting process, and is facilitated by a certified smoking cessation/tobacco addiction educator.

To register, or for more information, call Ellie Slater, tobacco cessation program coordinator, at 633-8894, or (800) 673-2426, ext.

Stop Smoking pocket Doc

Best Way To Stop Smoking - By Dr. Ralph.Q: What's the best way to quit smoking?

A: As an ex-smoker, I consider myself an expert on this topic. In fact, I quit several times! The last time was five years ago this past Thanksgiving. I'm not cocky enough to say that it is my last time, although I sure hope it is. I know myself well enough to know that I can never have one cigarette again without planning on starting a pack a day habit. Some people can handle an occasional cigarette. The huge addiction problem to nicotine is a testament to the fact that many people are, like me, prone to addiction.

I don't know that you would reach a consensus on any one best method for quitting, but I can tell you what worked for me and some of my patients. It's a process that takes a while, but one doesn't learn how to be a smoker the first time you puff on a cigarette.

Quitting on Impulse May Be Smokers' Best Bet

Best Way To Stop Smoking: Smokers are often told the best way to nix their habit is to have a game plan, including a quit day and a quit strategy. But could that advice be counterproductive? In a recent study putting that question to the test, smokers who quit spontaneously - without advance planning - had a greater chance of succeeding than those who planned ahead. The results, published in the British Medical Journal, seem to flout traditional smoking-cessation guidance.

Dr. Michael Siegel, a professor of social and behavioral sciences at Boston University who examines tobacco control policies and smoking behavior, said the findings make a lot of sense.

"Planned quit attempts are implemented gradually and thus the level of motivation is probably rather low," he said.
