Hospital refuses surgery on fatties, smokers
Stop Smoking By Laser: Patients need to lose weight, quit smoking Affects liposuction and body recontouring Plan to get "better outcomes for patients" Adelaide's Queen Elizabeth Hospital is refusing to perform certain major surgery on anyone who is obese or a smoker.
In one of the first moves of its kind in Australia, the hospital has issued criteria demanding patients achieve a "healthy weight range" and quit smoking before being considered for liposuction and body recontouring treatment. The procedure involves surgically removing large folds of excess skin and fat which can harbour infections.
All current patients will be told to return to their GP to devise a weight-loss strategy or a quit plan if they do not meet the new requirements. Melbourne's Alfred Hospital previously has refused to perform lung surgery on smokers but the Australian Medical Association yesterday was unaware of any other hospitals with similar criteria.
